What Are Spacers for Braces?

Before having braces treatment, Dr. Lofters may recommend spacers. Spacers or expanders are small rubber pieces placed between teeth that are too close together.

In order for braces to be effective, there must be a little space between the teeth. Less than one centimeter in diameter, rubber expanders create this space between the teeth. Most patients only wear orthodontic spacers for one to two weeks.

What Braces Options Do Teens have?

Teens have several popular choices for braces. Traditional metal braces are slightly lower cost and can adjust the teeth at a faster pace. Ceramic or clear braces are subtle,

blending in with your teeth and making it less noticeable that you are receiving braces treatment. Both braces types use rubber bands that come in a variety of colors, so your teen can choose the color at each adjustment.

Benefits of Orthodontic Spacers

Some teeth, particularly molar teeth, may be too close together for braces to work effectively. Creating small amounts of space between the teeth allow the teeth to move. Dr. Lofters will determine if spacers are the best treatment for you.

Recovery from Spacers

Spacers may be painful when they are inserted if there is no space between your teeth. It is also possible that you will experience no pain originally though your mouth may feel sore after a couple of days. You may notice bleeding, swelling or pain when chewing. This is normal and will subside. If you experience pain, an over the counter pain medicine is sufficient. Some patients also find relief from eating cold foods, such as ice cream. You may also want to avoid hard or chewy foods such as popcorn or gum.

You should not pick at the spacers, as this may cause them to come out prematurely. Dr. Lofters may not be able to apply your braces in time if there is not enough space on the day of your initial braces appointment.

How Much Do Braces Spacers Cost?

The cost of spacers for braces will vary based on your needs. Orthodontic spacers may be covered by your dental insurance. We will work with you to determine your benefits coverage and what you may owe for your treatment. Smile Envy Dental & Orthodontics offers to finance through CareCredit® as well as other payment options.
